If you’ve spent any time grinding endgame content in Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ve probably seen frenzy crystal pop up as a required material for some of the strongest armor and weapon sets in the game. It’s one of the rarer mid-to-late game crafting components, and a lot of players get stuck trying to track down consistent farming spots without wasting hours wandering empty zones. I spent three days testing different routes and monster hunts to nail down the most efficient ways to get this material, so you don’t have to waste your limited playtime on dead ends.
What is Frenzy Crystal in Monster Hunter Wilds, and What Is It Used For?
Frenzy crystal is a dense, glowing crystalline material formed from concentrated residual Frenzy Virus residue left by powerful afflicted monsters. It only forms in areas that have been heavily corrupted by the virus, or in the internal organs of monsters that have survived long-term Frenzy infection. It doesn’t drop from low rank or even regular high rank monsters, so you won’t start seeing it until you unlock master rank content and afflicted hunt quests.
Its main use is crafting and upgrading some of the strongest gear in the game, and you’ll need a lot of it if you want to build multiple loadouts for different monster types. Common uses include high-tier elemental resistance armor, endgame status effect weapons, and endgame upgrades for your Palico and Palamute gear. Most full master rank armor sets require 12 to 18 frenzy crystals to craft, and individual weapon upgrades need 3 to 5 each, so building a stockpile early will save you a lot of headaches later.
I made the mistake of selling my first 5 frenzy crystals when I was clearing out my inventory early in master rank, thinking they were just random junk. I had to grind for 2 hours to get them back when I unlocked the Diablos elemental armor set a few hours later, so don’t make that same mistake. Even if you don’t have an immediate use for them, hold onto every crystal you find.
Best Locations to Farm Frenzy Crystal in Monster Hunter Wilds
You can get frenzy crystal two main ways: mining special afflicted mining outcrops in corrupted zones, or carving/capturing master rank afflicted monsters. I’ve tested every possible farming route, and these three spots give the highest drop rates and fastest return on time invested:
- The volcanic northern zone of the Wilds Spine map: Afflicted mining outcrops here have a 32% drop rate for frenzy crystal, the highest of any mining spot in the game. Run the loop from the northern camp to the lava lake edge, there are 6 mining outcrops along the route that respawn every 8 minutes. You can usually get 2 full runs in before you need to fast travel back to camp to reset the outcrops.
- Master rank afflicted Anjanath and Rathian hunts: Capturing either of these monsters gives a 45% chance to get 2 to 3 frenzy crystals as a quest reward, plus you get other rare materials for gear upgrades at the same time. These hunts only take 10 to 15 minutes each if you have a decent build, so they’re a great alternative if you get bored of mining.
- The corrupted swamp zone of the Murkwood Marsh map: Mining outcrops near the giant corrupted tree have a 27% drop rate, and there are usually 2 to 3 small afflicted monsters roaming the area that you can kill for bonus crystal drops between mining runs. This route is slower than the Wilds Spine one, but it’s a good option if you need to farm other marsh-specific materials at the same time.
Make sure you bring a geologist skill level 3 charm when you go mining, it increases the number of drops you get per outcrop by 2, so you’ll get way more crystals per run. I usually run this build when I’m farming, and I get about 8 to 10 crystals per hour just from mining, plus extra from any random afflicted monsters I kill along the way. Don’t waste time on low rank afflicted zones, they only drop low-grade frenzy shards, not the full crystal you need for endgame crafts.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Farming Frenzy Crystal
A lot of players waste hours farming inefficiently because they don’t know these small tips that cut grind time in half. The first mistake I see all the time is ignoring afflicted monster investigation quests. A lot of players just stick to mining, but investigation quests with gold or silver reward boxes have a way higher drop rate for extra crystals, so if you see an investigation for an afflicted monster you can beat quickly, take it. I’ve gotten as many as 5 crystals from a single 12-minute investigation quest before, which is way faster than mining the same amount.
Another common mistake is not using your Palico’s gathering skill. Equip your Palico with the gathering support type and set it to prioritize mining, it will pick up extra crystals from outcrops you walk past without you even noticing, adding 2 to 3 extra per run on average. It’s such a small change, but it adds up over time, especially if you do a lot of farming runs every week.
Don’t make the mistake of selling excess crystals early on either. I see a lot of new master rank players dump materials they don’t recognize for extra zenny, but frenzy crystal is always in demand for new gear added in post-launch patches, so keep at least 20 in your item box at all times. Also, don’t waste time mining non-afflicted outcrops, they will never drop frenzy crystal, no matter how high your geologist skill is.
Smart Uses for Your Frenzy Crystal Stockpile
Now that you have a bunch of crystals, you don’t want to waste them on low-tier gear you’ll replace in a few hours. First, prioritize crafting the Frenzy Resist Armor Set first, it gives 40% resistance to Frenzy Virus buildup, which makes every endgame afflicted hunt way easier, especially if you’re playing solo. I used to struggle with afflicted elder dragon hunts until I crafted this set, and now I beat them 30% faster on average with way fewer cart risks.
Next, upgrade your favorite status weapon first, whether that’s a paralysis greatsword or a poison bow. The frenzy crystal upgrade adds 15% more status buildup, which cuts hunt times down by almost 20% for most endgame monsters. If you main a raw damage weapon, save these upgrades for your secondary status weapon that you use for tough group hunts.
If you play with a regular group, use extra crystals to craft the group support charm, it gives all nearby teammates a 10% attack boost when you’re affected by Frenzy Virus, which is a game changer for coordinated hunt runs. You can also use extra crystals to upgrade your Palamute’s attack armor, it makes them way more effective at drawing monster aggro during tough hunts, so you can get more safe hits in. That said, don’t waste crystals on low rank gear upgrades, they don’t give enough of a stat boost to be worth the grind you put in to get the crystals.
Frenzy crystal is one of the most useful endgame materials in Monster Hunter Wilds, and once you nail down a consistent farming route, you’ll never run out when you need it for new gear or upgrades. I still run the Wilds Spine mining loop once a week to top up my stock, and it takes less than 45 minutes to get enough crystals to cover all my crafting needs for the rest of the week. Try out the routes and tips we covered, and you’ll be decked out in top-tier endgame gear before you know it.
