Gogmazios Monster Hunter Wilds Guide: Weaknesses, Loot & Pro Fight Tips

If you’ve spent any time grinding endgame content in Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ve probably heard other players hype up the massive tar-covered elder dragon that waits in the ash-covered northern valleys. Gogmazios Monster Hunter Wilds is a returning fan favorite from earlier entries in the series, and it’s earned its reputation as one of the toughest, most rewarding fights in the current game. I’ve spent close to 40 hours farming this beast for its rare mantle to craft my endgame hammer build, and I’ve picked up every trick, weakness, and loot shortcut you could need to beat it without carting three times mid-quest.

Gogmazios Monster Hunter Wilds Core Traits & Habitat Details

Gogmazios is a massive four-winged elder dragon covered in a thick, sticky layer of cooled tar that acts as natural armor against most low-level attacks. It makes its home in the Scorched Ash Basin, a volcanic region filled with boiling tar pits and loose ash that can slow your movement if you step off the main rock paths. Unlike many other elder dragons in Wilds, Gogmazios doesn’t roam across multiple regions; it only spawns in the deepest part of the basin, so you won’t have to chase it across the map mid-fight. Its signature explosive tar secretion is what makes it so dangerous, as the tar sticks to your armor for 10 seconds and explodes if you take any fire or dragon damage while it’s attached. It also inflicts dragon element blight with its breath attacks, which cuts your attack power in half until you clear it with a nullberry or roll it off. I learned that last part the hard way on my first run, when I ignored the blight and my 500-damage hammer hits dropped to 200 for almost a full minute.

You’ll also notice that Gogmazios leaves trails of tar across the arena as it moves, which stay active for 30 seconds and slow you down if you step in them. In later phases, these trails become explosive, so you’ll need to map out safe paths around the arena as the fight progresses. It’s not the fastest elder dragon in the game, but its large size and wide attack range make it easy to get caught off guard if you’re not paying attention to your positioning.

Gogmazios Weaknesses & Effective Damage Types

Before you head into the basin to face Gogmazios, you need to make sure your build is optimized to exploit its biggest weaknesses, instead of wasting time with weapons that barely scratch its tar armor. First, elemental weaknesses: ice is far and away the most effective element, dealing 30% more damage to unarmored parts and 15% more to tar-covered sections. Thunder is a solid second choice, dealing 20% more to unarmored parts, but it won’t break through tar nearly as fast as ice. Gogmazios is completely immune to dragon element, and fire damage only deals 5% extra at most, so leave your fire builds at home for this fight. Ice element weapons with 300+ raw damage and white sharpness are your best bet here, especially hammers, charge blades, or dual blades that let you land fast, repeated hits to break its armor quickly.

When it comes to hit zones, the head is the weakest point by far, but it’s also the most dangerous to get close to, as Gogmazios uses fast head swipes and bite attacks that can one-shot low-defense builds. If you’re new to the fight, stick to its hind legs and wings first: breaking the tar off its legs will cause frequent staggers, giving you openings to run up and land hits on its head between attacks. Status effects work relatively well too: blast will deal extra damage every time it procs, stun and sleep work for big wakeup hits, and paralysis can give your team a few seconds of free damage if you’re playing multiplayer. Poison is largely useless, as Gogmazios has very high poison resistance that makes the effect wear off in 10 seconds or less.

Phase-by-Phase Fight Breakdown for Gogmazios

Gogmazios has three distinct fight phases, each with new attack patterns and increased damage output, so it’s important to know what to watch for at every step. Phase 1 starts as soon as you enter its arena, and it stays grounded for 90% of this phase, using slow, heavy swipes, short charge attacks, and single globs of tar that it spits at players from a distance. This is the best phase to break its leg and wing armor, as it moves relatively slowly and doesn’t have any one-shot attacks yet. Stay near its hind legs, dodge left when it does a side swipe, and you’ll get through this phase without taking much damage.

Phase 2 triggers when Gogmazios drops to 60% health, and it will fly up to the edge of the arena, firing volleys of tar bombs that cover large sections of the ground and dive bombing players who stay out in the open. Flash pods work to knock it out of the sky here, but it builds resistance quickly, so only use two max during this phase to save them for emergencies. Once you knock it down, you’ll have 15 seconds of free damage to break its chest armor, which exposes a new weak point that takes 40% extra damage for the rest of the fight.

Phase 3 starts when Gogmazios drops to 20% health, and it becomes enraged permanently until the end of the fight. Its tar attacks now explode on contact, its movement speed increases by 30%, and it gains a new one-shot AOE attack that covers almost the entire arena. When you see it rear back and huff black smoke from its mouth, run for the nearest elevated rock or climb up the side of the arena wall to avoid taking fatal damage. You don’t have much time to react, so keep an eye on its body language at all times during this phase. Before you head into the fight, make sure you pack these must-have items to make the run far smoother:

  • Max level ice resistance decorations to reduce tar burn damage by 40%
  • 3 flash pods + 2 flash bugs to craft more mid-fight for airborne phases
  • 10 nullberries to clear dragon blight instantly when applied
  • 2 large barrel bombs for wakeup damage after sleeping the monster in phase 3
  • A health booster to place down during phase 3 for quick healing between attacks

If you’re playing solo, you can also bring a palico with a paralysis weapon and a sleep horn to get extra openings for big damage. I always run with a palico that has the heal horn trait, and it’s saved me from carting in phase 3 more times than I can count. Just make sure you don’t stand too close to your palico when Gogmazios fires tar volleys, as the splash damage can hit both of you at once.

Gogmazios Loot Drops & Best Gear to Craft

All that time grinding Gogmazios is worth it for the incredibly powerful gear you can craft from its drops, which are some of the best endgame items in Wilds right now. Low rank Gogmazios drops give you parts for the basic Gogmazios armor set, which has 50% fire resistance and 30% blast resistance, making it perfect for farming other volcanic monsters like Rathalos or Teostra. High rank drops let you craft weapons like the Gogmazios Bludgeon, a hammer with 480 raw damage, 200 blast damage, and white sharpness that’s one of the best general-use hammers in the game.

Master rank Gogmazios drops are where the real value is, though. The Gogmazios Tar Coat armor set has 70% blast resistance, 40% fire resistance, and a unique skill called Tar Shield that reduces all explosive damage by 50%, which is game-changing for fights against monsters like Bazelgeuse or Amatsu that use constant explosive attacks. If you’re looking for rare drops, the Gogmazios Heart has a 3% drop rate, and you can only get it if you break its head and capture it at the end of the fight. You need three of these to craft the master rank version of the Gogmazios charge blade, which is widely considered the best charge blade in the game right now for both solo and multiplayer play.

I’ve farmed 17 runs of master rank Gogmazios to get three hearts, so I can confirm that the drop rate really is that low, but the weapon is more than worth the grind. If you’re having bad luck with drops, try eating a lucky cat meal before starting the quest, as it increases rare drop rates by 15% for the duration of the run. You can also equip the Geologist skill to pick up extra tar drops from the ground around the arena, which can cut down on the number of runs you need to do for common parts.

At the end of the day, Gogmazios Monster Hunter Wilds is a tough fight, but it’s far from impossible once you learn its patterns and come prepared with the right build and items. Don’t get discouraged if you cart a few times on your first runs; even veteran players struggle with its phase 3 one-shot attack the first few times they face it. Once you get the hang of its movement and learn to dodge its tar attacks, you’ll be able to farm it quickly for all the rare drops you need to build your perfect endgame loadout.
